Education - RN Extern, Decatur

Job Summary:  
  • Under the general direction of his/her supervisor, the nurse extern provides a variety of patient care activities for assigned patients. 
  • This level is based on experience and skill check off at the employee’s School of Nursing; skills are validated through the education department utilizing the same check off methods as utilized with other employees.
  • Alongside the unit specific assigned preceptor, perform nursing patient care duties for the assigned unit or department under the direction of a Clinical Coordinator and/or Nursing Unit Director.
  • Participate in learning activities, classroom lectures, etc. provided through the Wise Health System Nurse Extern Program.
  • Plan, provide, and evaluate total nursing care in accordance with the established patient care philosophy.
  • Facilitate individualized, goal-directed nursing care through use of the nursing process and the principles of primary nursing in accordance with departmental and hospital policies and procedures.
  • Relate effectively with other shifts for continuity of care, maintain satisfactory relations with other departments and nursing units; and participate in all phases of education.  
  • Must attend New Hire Orientation and Nursing Orientation as well as work alongside unit specific assigned preceptor

Reporting Relationship: 
  • Assistant Clinical Education Director, Clinical Education Director
  • 1) BLS required
  • 2) Currently enrolled in an accredited RN program
  • 3) A nursing student who has completed at least one semester of clinical experience in an accredited Nursing program and skill certification; or a newly graduated nurse who has failed State Boards once and is without a Temporary Permit.

New Hires will have 60 days to acquire the required Basic Life Support (CPR, ACLS, PALS, BLS, and/or any other life support certifications required for the job).
  • There is an inherent potential for mucous membrane or skin contact with blood, body fluids, or tissues, or a potential for spills splashes during the performance of the job. 
  • Universal precautions must be observed and protective devices worn by the employee when performing those tasks likely to cause exposure.
Employment standards include current requirements as determined by Federal, State, and Wise Health System policy.
Physical Demands: 
  • Sit 2-4 hours,
  • Walk/Stand 6-8 hours
  • Weight Lifted/Force Exerted: 25-50 lbs;   
  • Ability to properly care for the patient population
  • Note: A Nurse Extern who deviates from his or her scope of practice or fails to comply with the standards of practice/policy and procedures of Wise Health System will be dismissed from the nurse externship program and may be dismissed from employment at the facility.
  • Standards of Practice, Patient Safety, and Professionalism must be up held at all times.
