Critical Care Unit - Nurse Extern, Decatur

 SUMMARY OF RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Once employee is of a registered nurse (RN) status, the incumbent will serve as a member of the healthcare team by providing holistic care for the patient.
  • Until this time, the extern will be allowed to perform selected psychomotor skills and activities delegated by the RN.
  • Support patient and family education by reinforcing health teaching planned or provided by the RN.
  • Skillfully document observations, tasks and other data on to the medical record.
  • All treatments, procedures, and charting will be monitored by an RN.
  • Must work a minimum of 2 shifts per week.
  • Must follow hospital attendance policy.
  • Must be flexible and customer service oriented. 
  • Active participation in the Unified Leadership Council, with a minimum attendance of 3 meetings per calendar year. 
 
EDUCATION EXPERIENCE:                                                                                                                                
  1. Current enrollment and active participation in a state accredited nursing program.
  2. Verification of satisfactory completion of 2 semesters of direct patient care clinical experiences (including basic fundamental nursing skills) prior to starting the externship program.
  3. Proof of current nursing program satisfactory completion of academic and clinical requirements.
  4. A cumulative GPA of 3.0 upon entering into the externship program.
  5. Maintain a minimum B letter grade in every nursing focused class (to include nursing program and core extern classes).
  6. Satisfactory completion from an associate or baccalaureate nursing program within 1 year of entering the externship program.
  7. Current employees: Should not have received any corrective discipline procedures or job performance issues for the previous six (6) months.
  8. Current employee: Must meet the minimum qualifications for the open position.
 
KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITY:    
  1. Gather data which may be utilized in the nursing process.
  2. Perform assigned tasks/procedures in accordance with education level and verified competence
  3. Share observations related to patient care with health care team members
  4. Demonstrate effective communication and interpersonal skills with clients and customers
  5. Demonstrate age appropriate delivery of patient care
  6. Follow  policies pertaining to delegated duties
  7. Stay within the boundaries of the Nurse Extern job description as defined and delegated by a supervising Registered Nurse
  8. Perform other duties as assigned
 
REQUIREMENTS:   
  • Must have current BLS Healthcare Provider card.
 
New Hires will have 60 days to acquire the required Basic Life Support (CPR, ACLS, PALS, BLS, and/or any other life support certifications required for the job).
 
STATUS:
  • Hourly
 
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: 
  • Possess manual dexterity to manipulate technical patient care equipment. 
  • Able to cope with the mental and emotional stress of the position. 
  • Good general health and emotional stability.   
  • Must be able to stand and move for extended periods of time throughout the day. 
  • Must be able to squat, bend, kneel, reach and twist (occasionally to frequently).
  • Must be able to lift up to 75 pounds frequently and up to 100 pounds occasionally. 
  • Must be able to carry up to 34 pounds occasionally, must be able to push or pull up to 100 pounds occasionally. 
 
NOTE:
  • A Nurse Extern who deviates from his or her scope of practice or fails to comply with the standards of practice/policy and procedures of Wise Health System will be dismissed from the nurse externship program and may be dismissed from employment at the facility.
  • Standards of Practice, Patient Safety, and Professionalism must be up held at all times.
 
Employment standards include current requirements as determined by Federal, State, and Wise Health System policy.
