Surgery - CST Surgical Assistant, Argyle

SUMMARY OF RESPONSIBILITIES: 

The Certified Surgical Technician/Surgical Assistant in the surgical department is a care giver who assists in various types of surgical procedures.

The CST/Surgical Assistants principle duties include:
  • 1) Preparing the OR room, supplies, instruments, and equipment for assigned procedures.
  • 2) the CST/Surgical assistant applies principles of sterile technique while performing in the intra-operative setting.
  • 3) Maintains sterile field to promote safety and infection control
  • 4) Ensures all cases are pulled for scheduled procedure
  • 5) Opens sterile supplies for procedures and checks indicators for  integrity of packaging
  • 6) Adheres to Universal Protocol and actively participates in a “TIME-OUT” before each procedure
  • 7) Adheres to OR procedures for counting, medication labeling and other scrub duties.
  • 8) Follows AORN recommended practices and guidelines along with surgical services & hospital policies and procedure. 
  • 9) Demonstrates knowledge base and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the condition and age of the patients served and the variety of procedures performed.  
 
REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS: 
  • The Certified Surgical Technician/Surgical Assistant is under the direct supervision of the circulating nurse during surgery and under the direction of the Surgery Team Lead/Charge Nurse. 
  • Administratively the Certified Surgical Technician/Surgical Assistant is under the Manager of Surgery and CCO.
 
REQUIREMENTS:    
  • 1) High school graduate or GED
  • 2) BCLS  
  • 3) Graduate of an accredited surgical technician program. 
  • 4) Surgical technician certification  
  • 5)   Graduate of an accredited surgical assisting program
  • 6) Call may be required
  • 7) Certification as a surgical first assistant
 
Must have current licensure/certifications upon hire. 

New Hires will have 60 days to acquire the required Basic Life Support (CPR)
 

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
  • Able to lift 10-20 pounds daily, stand for long periods

  • Practices within the system and departmental policies and procedures.
 
OSHA TASK CATEGORY ONE:
  • There is an inherent potential for mucous membrane or skin contact with blood, body fluids, or tissues, or a potential for spills splashes during the performance of the job. 
  • Universal precautions must be observed and protective devices worn by the employee when performing those tasks likely to cause exposure.
 
Employment standards include current requirements as determined by Federal, State, and Wise Health System policy.
