Behavioral Health - CNA/PCA/MHT/Ward Clerk, Decatur

JOB TITLE:         Psych. C.N.A.
 
SUMMARY OF RESPONSIBILITIES: 
  • The Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) provides direct patient care to both adult and geriatric psychiatric inpatient populations.
  • The CNA will maintain an environment which promotes safety, and facilitates the most positive outcome for each patient.
  • In promoting a safe environment the CNA will observe patients who are on special precautions, and document patient observations as the physician order dictates.
  • In addition to observing and documenting patient observations the CNA will communicate with the nursing staff when patient behaviors or medical status demand further assessment and possible intervention.
  • The CNA will also perform environmental rounds, observing for unsafe patient conditions and will take appropriate action if noting unsafe conditions, hospital property in need of a work order, or contraband in patient rooms.
  • Assisting with admissions, skin assessments, property searches, cataloging patient belongings, transferring patients, assisting with ADLs and hygiene care, taking vital signs, and assisting with discharges are some of the daily functions that the CNA will perform under the direction of the RN.
  • The CNA will perform duties under the direction of the supervising RN and is expected to perform tasks as the needs of the unit and patients necessitate.
  • This includes psychiatric emergency management.
  • As the CNA will be in constant contact with patients and their families they will need to maintain a customer service friendly demeanor and also protect patient privacy in accordance with unit and hospital policy as well as HIPAA regulations.
  • Prefer CNA with experience in psychology, social work, behavioral science, or a related field.  
  • Prefer minimum of one year of experience in acute care psychiatric setting or a related field.
 
REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS: 
  • Reports operationally to the Charge Nurse and Unit Manager.
  • Administratively to the Unit Manager, Chief Nursing Officer, and Program Director
 
REQUIREMENTS:
  • 1) CPR Certified
  • 2) Documented attendance in management of aggressive behavior training through WHS  
  • 3) Must successfully pass WHS work steps program  
  • 4) High School Diploma or GED PREFERRED
  • 5) Licensed Certified Nursing Assistant.
 
New Hires will have 60 days to acquire the required Basic Life Support (CPR, ACLS, PALS, BLS, and/or any other life support certifications required for the job).
 
EMPLOYMENT STATUS:
  • Non Exempt Hourly

  • There is an occasional risk of exposure to mucous membranes or skin contact with blood, body fluids, or tissues, or a potential for spills or splashes during the performance on the job. 
  • Universal precautions must be observed and protective devices worn by the employee when performing a task that is likely to cause exposure.

JOB TITLE:           Ward Clerk- Mental Health Tech I
 
SUMMARY OF RESPONSIBILITIES: 
  • The Ward Clerk/ Mental Health Tech I assume the responsibility for clerical support of the nursing unit, and as assigned, responsible to provide assistance with patient care. 
  • Duties includes but is not limited to assisting in the admission and discharge processes, maintaining patient records, facilitating and coordinating unit communications,  maintaining an efficient nursing station, entering charges into the patient record, ensuring adequate supplies are available, and other duties as assigned by the supervising RN, Unit Manager, or Program Director.
  • The Ward Clerk/ Mental Health Tech I must also assist other staff on the floor as the demands of the unit necessitate and is appropriate per standards of care and hospital policy.
  • This could include, but is not limited to, assisting with patient observations, facilitating visitation, taking vitals and assisting with patient ADL’s as appropriate and psychiatric emergency management.   
  • The Ward Clerk/ Mental Health Tech I  can expect frequent patient and family interactions, either in person or via the telephone, and as such is expected to present in a customer service oriented capacity, paying specific attention to customer satisfaction and creating an environment conducive to the best patient outcome possible.
  • This customer service attitude is also expected when interacting with hospital staff or staff from other facilities.
  • The Ward Clerk/ Mental Health Tech I will respect patient privacy in accordance with hospital and unit policy, as well as HIPAA regulations.  
  • C.N.A license or bachelor’s degree in a related field and/or MHT experience preferred.  
  • Prefer experience as ward clerk or related field. 
  • Two year acute psychiatric inpatient experience preferred.
 
REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS: 
  • Reports directly to Charge Nurse per shift, clinically to the Unit Manager, and administratively to the Program Director.
  • Directly supervises no employees
