Surgery - Pre-Op Holding RN, Decatur

  • The Preoperative Holding RN completes pre-op assessments of same day outpatient and inpatient surgical patients; prepares patients for surgical and/or invasive procedures; communicates patient needs with the appropriate health care providers; and provides follow-up with fellow pre-op holding nurses, the pre-op nurse auditor, the Preoperative Clinical Manager, the Surgery Manager,  the surgeon(s), primary care physician, anesthesia nurses, and anesthesia providers.
  • The Preoperative Holding RN follows anesthesia guidelines, hospital policies, and implements preoperative orders.
  • The Preop holding nurse also follows Universal Protocol policy for correct site, side and level, institutes normothermia measures and effective pain management measures, follows VTE and SCIP protocols and collaborates effectively with other disciplines as appropriate. 
  • Directly reports to and is under the supervision of the Preoperative Clinical Coordinator. 
  • Administratively, the pre-operative Holding RN reports to and is under the direct supervision of the Director of Surgery and the Chief Nursing Officer.
  • 1)  Current State of Texas licensure of Registered Nurse and graduate of an accredited school of nursing
  • 2)  1 year of perioperative nursing clinical experience 
  • 3) Preferred:  2 year of perioperative nursing clinical experience 
  • 3)  BLS Certification  4) ACLS  2)  PALS 

Must have current licensure/certifications upon hire. 

New Hires will have 60 days to acquire the required Basic Life Support (CPR, ACLS, PALS, BLS, and/or any other life support certifications required for the job).
  • There is an inherent potential for mucous membrane or skin contact with blood, body fluids, or tissues, or a potential for spills splashes during the performance of the job. 
  • Universal precautions must be observed and protective devices worn by the employee when performing those tasks likely to cause exposure.
Employment standards include current requirements as determined by Federal, State, and Wise Health System policy.
  • Able to lift up to ten pounds independently. 
  • Able to independently provide and/or assist with direct patient care in the Pre-op holding areas.
